30. Fort Monostor

Fort Monostor is the largest modern fortress in Central Europe and is part of the Komárom fortress system. The anti-Turkish fortress was built in the 16th century on the site of a medieval castle. The construction of the Fort Monostor took place in 1851 and 1871 and covers an area of 70 hectares.

The number of rooms was 640 and could accommodate up to 8,000 soldiers. After construction, the fort was used to protect the central castle and to control the Danube. The fortress played its role in World War I as a recruiting and training center.
